2022 was a very mixed bag for me, but tonight I’m just happy to be home safe with my wife and our kitty boys. 2023 still sounds like the impossibly distant future to me, and it’s almost here. Here’s hoping we all make the most of it.

June: Did something to my elbow August: Finally got an ortho appointment to get referred to PT October: Started PT Early December: Hm, you should talk to ortho again, this isn’t helping Today: ortho pokes at arm for 30s, says I need test. First availability for test: April. 🇺🇸
Well that went unexpectedly well. I caught an hour earlier flight back to Madison and get to be in bed when I should have been landing!
(Hopefully also this is the end of my travel tweets for a couple months)
Three very sad-looking Southwest planes parked on the tarmac at BDL, waiting for crews to show up. Apparently they cancelled every flight into and out of here today.
(I’m flying United, so watch me get stuck overnight at ORD again)
OK, I did at least figure out how to upgrade PHP to something that’s not EOL’d, but it’s still mega-overpriced and I kind of also don’t want to deal with the upcoming transition to GoDaddy’s hosting. So still taking suggestions.
OK, I think it’s time for me to find a new host, Media Temple isn’t even keeping PHP up to date for 💸.
Accepting new host suggestions which have:
Extremely fuck Greg Abbott and whichever of his cronies organized dropping off three buses of migrants in DC with temps in the teens and no warm clothing.
I hope anyone who was in any way responsible for this gets kidney stones.
Made it to my cousin’s house just before 2am. I’m so tired I’m pretty sure I hallucinated Santa on the way over here. Merry Christmas, ya filthy animals.
Pilots flying my plane from ATL to BDL (Hartford CT) were apparently about an hour and a half late leaving Montego Bay, Jamaica. Can’t imagine why they wouldn’t have wanted to leave!
Been in the ATL airport for about a half hour and already seen two decent-sized floods that appear to be from burst pipes.
I say appear to be because one guy I asked if one of the floods was a burst pipe said, “Nah, we’re opening a water park! Come back soon!”
Tough but fair.
I have taught @ajoelthomas@twitter.com well.
I realize today is Festivus and not Thanksgiving, but boy am I thankful I’m not in Madison right now because alllllll the NOPE
Bonus nerd points to our hotel that rented a couple giant telescopes so people could see the nebula around Orion. That was neato.
Nephew, pointing at his grandma (my stepmom): Ella esta la jefa. Stepbrother: Don’t call my mother a whore!
I didn’t even upgrade my phone this year and still managed to catch Orion hand-held last night. Still blows my mind how much more capable most camera phones are now compared to absolute state of the art point and shoots 10 years ago.
OH at dinner: “I consider myself a fairly tolerant person, except when people are being a bunch of assholes.”
Like, I know better than to try to keep them from getting drunk. I am drunk.
But like, I’ve been so hung over so many times and I see the pain coming. Especially for the grad school aged ones who think it’s still college.
Oh, sweetie. It is not.
Trying to keep my high school-to-grad school aged nieces and nephews from getting completely shitfaced at an all-inclusive resort is a game I probably should not have attempted to play.
They’ll find out in the morning (Or not, damned young’uns).
I’ve been posting everything to both the bird site and the extinct elephant forebear site with micro dot blog. Will keep doing so until after Xmas vacation.
I still feel the Office Space “Why should I leave? He’s the one who sucks” meme, but it’s just gotten sad.
“When should we sneak this out?” “On a Sunday during overtime of the most tense World Cup final in decades” “Perfect. People will be so distracted!”
Or also they will literally all be looking at various social media to call this what it is: flop-sweat desperation.
You know Delta serves the American South when the safety video has to clarify that chewing tobacco is among the things covered by the no smoking policy
Oh win, I thought I was gonna miss the World Cup final being in the air, but instead I’m gonna get to watch it in miniature
Huge family gatherings can be overwhelming for me, but I’m gonna have to keep my whining to a minimum given that I will be in the Dominican Republic with my dad and stepfamily while in Madison it will be doing this.
Extremely hard pass.
There are 3 kinds of winter drivers in the Midwest:

Swift Package Manager: You absolutely cannot have a dependency that points to a commit or branch if you want to use it as a transient dependency.
Also SPM: You absolutely must have a dependency point to a commit or branch if it’s using unsafe flags.

At Heathrow to head back to the US. At least, I think I am.
Working on my scientific thesis that Burratta balls at Italian restaurants increase linearly in size for the same cost the closer you get to Italy.
Good fight from England there. And I think I managed to nail the “very excited about the game, not too broken up about the loss” sweet spot with the pub I managed to cram into.
Morocco v. France is going to be fucking epic.
In case anyone wondered how loud it got in a London pub during that Kane pk #WorldCup
A feature Swift should absolutely steal from Kotlin hachyderm.io/@holly/10…
Woot, it worked. Thanks @manton!
Sounds like accessibility crossposting is back up at micro dot blog…let’s find out!

Trying to find a pub where people care enough about the World Cup that watching the game will be super fun, but not so much that they’re going to riot if England loses to France. Tough balance.

Time for some #ServerSideSwift! Tim was not kidding when he told me I didn’t need to worry about anything on my slides being too small.
Nice of the Brits to welcome me back

Man it was a good day. Also, this is going to hurt tomorrow.
Snuck over to Paris for lunch. Amis + fromage = 😍😍😍
Wot’s all this then
Flight from ORD to LHR, take 2: The 5 Hours Later Edition. Wish us luck getting across the pond in one piece.
I’ll take “things you absolutely do not want to see on an international flight” for 200, Alex.
Dear England: Can you please clarify if I will still be bombarded in all dimensions by Christmas carols when I arrive? I just need to prepare myself.
Extremely excited to be headed to #ServerSideSwift. If you’re in London or its environs this week, hit me up!

Goals in your teens: I want to be a rock star! Goals in your forties: Man, I cannot wait until we buy so I can put in a foot pedal control for the kitchen sink.
I’m clearly missing something on iOS 16’s SwiftUI NavigationStack: Why on earth can there only ever be one at a time? And what the hell are you supposed to do if you have mutliple tabs that should each have their own stack?
Turning on automatic screen lock on your laptop
It is Toaster Oven Chestnut season, and WOW I should have started putting a wee bit of water in with them ages ago. They’re absolutely best over a fire, but if you’re doing them in an oven, steam those bad boys!
If you were wondering how the Adderall shortage is going, there’s now a nationwide shortage of my non-Adderall ADD meds too.
Gonna be an interesting few weeks of SQUIRREL

Shower thought this morning: Why does Swift Package Manager consider packages pointing at tags stable, when tags can be moved, but considers packages pointing at commit hashes unstable, when theoretically those shouldn’t be duplicated?
Kids seem glad to have us home.
(Not pictured: Hank repeatedly trying to shove himself between George Michael and the couch arm, mostly leading to Hank sitting on Georgie while Georgie gives an OH COME ON look)
Five Guys review or your most flaming friend’s Grindr profile?
On one hand, it’s great to see so many more EVs on the road this year than the last 2.5 years we’ve had the Bolt.
On the other, the Electrify America in Tomah, which is one of two L3 chargers between Eau Claire and Madison, is down to 1/4 chargers working.
The line is cranky.
This troll got so close to a properly palindromic insult.
The best way to get me to subscribe to your service is to have Siri misinterpret what I said and have it kick off a “free trial” for a feature I did not intend to use, then have it play something that was absolutely not what I asked it to play.
Hey Internet: I’ve got a 20% off sale going until the end of November on my silly lasered things (and also some other stuff like bottlecap coasters): www.etsy.com/shop/desi…
One of the kids confused the microwave and the toaster oven, so if you ever wondered how long you need to microwave a bagel before it causes smoke to pour out of the microwave: Definitely less than five minutes.
It’s not like convincing a platform like Twitter to make a foundational change would require any skills besides writing a for loop that might be useful as you’re lighting the world on fire. 🙄 twitter.com/CaseyNewt…
Ran across some folks in Edina who may have been a bit too optimistic about the thanksgiving invitation they received.
“Forks are not swords!” “What? Of course they are!”
Gonna be an interesting few days.
Electrify America is basically gonna get DDoSed tomorrow from a bunch of people taking their first road trips in their EVs.
And from what I’m seeing on the road to Minneapolis from Madison this afternoon, they ain’t ready. Broken chargers galore.
I wonder how many people are going to tell him that he should bootstrap their code by running rm -rf .

I am extremely late to this particular lesbian party but daaaaaaaaaaaaamn D’Arcy Carden in #ALeagueOfTheirOwn. I thought she was so outstanding in The Good Place, but now I also believe I have the vapors.
I think Tootbot might be afoot mastodon.social/@paul@tap…
The suspect in the Colorado Springs shooting apparently was in a multi-hour standoff with police last year after a bomb threat against his mother. No reason to take away his guns though! 🤦♀️ www.nytimes.com/2022/11/2…
I brought some of my grandma’s “everyday china” back from Atlanta. Trying to figure out whether I can put it in the dishwasher, I found the line “Food is china’s greatest enemy.”
Like…what? It’s like how water is a boat’s worst enemy. It’s what it’s DESIGNED to be used with!
For reference, I am 65 inches tall.
(For people who use the metric system: 66in ≈ 168 cm)
Welp. I’m also @designatednerd on micro dot blog and mastodon dot social when the bird site finally collapses.
In the meantime please enjoy these photos of our cats, Hank and George Michael, making themselves at home on an afghan my dad’s mom made when I was born.
Was making a grocery list today and autocarrot decided that instead of “lemon”, I meant “Lenin”. Clearly a commie takeover is upon us.

Headed home with a decent chunk of the archive to digitize. As always when I head home from Atlanta, I am reminded that my father is the embodiment of this Onion piece: www.theonion.com/dad-sugge…
My stepmom was watching CNBC and I discovered that @caseynewton has street cred. Looking forward to hearing about his next rap beef.
Happy Veterans’ Day! Please enjoy this picture of my dad from when he was one of the oldest guys in Basic Training during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1963 (by this point he had already graduated from law school and done a fellowship)
Also, day 1 record of Oldest Located Item in the Archive is a 1948 middle school band concert program. Let’s see how low we can go tomorrow!
Dad and stepmom are moving to a smaller place, so I’m helping dad clean out his, uh, archives. Beginning to understand a lot more of my collection patterns.
Did find some gems from my childhood in there though, including this clarifying note to the Tooth Fairy.
My dad offered to pick me up if the cab line was too long. I was like dad, I am here on your birthday and I’d like to see you have more of them, and I’m not sure you getting on Atlanta freeways at 1am is compatible with that goal.
(He was right that the cab line sucks, though)
Finally made it to Atlanta. Unsurprisingly 12:30 am on Thursday morning is as quiet as I’ve ever seen it here.
New plane showed up, they cleaned it, we boarded, they need to print off one piece of paper for the pilot to sign so we can leave three hours late….and the printer broke 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️
iOS folk would be well advised to trip over themselves to hire Tamar. twitter.com/tamarshma…
Well the one good thing about having a 3+ hour delay at an airport like Madison is that we’re now the last flight of the day so I’m an awful lot less worried about covid with the 45 people on my flight spread through the entire terminal, all regretting our life choices.
Me, a United mega-frequent flyer: Hm I guess I should take Delta to Atlanta because it’s a direct flight from Madison Delta: LOL your flight has been delayed at least two hours, wiping out any advantage we had. Sucks to be you!
The dumbest part of this is that we ran into this at Apollo but I had completely memory-holed it and wasted like an hour trying to figure out what was wrong.
Thanks brain, you’re a peach.
Woof. To save everyone the trouble I had:
If you get a the manifest is missing a Swift tools version specification
error when adding a new package that has a 0.x.x version format, check that it’s actually pulling the latest version.
*heard. I’m not paying anyone for editing. Get off my lawn.
🇺🇸 Reminder for late voters: If you’re in line when the polls close, in most (if not all) places, they gotta let you vote. Stay in line and make your voice herd!
I know they’re there for good reason, but the “No discussion of politics in the polling place!” signs at my precinct immediately made me think “Gentlemen, please! There’s no fighting in the War Room!”
Eat shit, Ron Johnson and Tim Michaels.

The Midwest: if you don’t like the weather, wait 5 minutes.
Trying out micro.blog crossposting to Twitter and Mastodon. I gotta admit, I underestimated how quickly and how badly things would go pear-shaped.
